ROYAL DESPATCH CASE. MR, KNIGHT SENDING TEAM HOME. HY GABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT SYDNEY, Sept. 12. Mi,*. Knight announced his intention of sending some of his horses back to New Zealand. Royal Despatch and Alfonso will be shipped to-morrow. Regarding others of the team, it is stated that they, including Ballymena, will probably be shipped next week. As far as he could say at present, Glentruin, too, would leave next week, hut he was awaiting a message before making final decision in her case Should Mr. Knight adhere to his decision, the absence of the two cracks, Ballymena and Glentruin, from the Randwick (Spring Meeting will cause much disappointment, and alter considerably anticipation which have ruled so far. Despite the findings of the stipendiary stewards, Mr. Knight expresses unshaken confidence in his trainer (F. D. Jones) and the jockey (M. McCarten). The happenings in connection with the Royal Despatch case undoubtedly had an influence in deciding Mr. Knight to send the horses hack, but he also felt it wa,s always difficult placing horses under a fresh trainer on the eve of a meeting, and, anyway, most of the Randwick trainers have had their hands full for some time.

THE CHELMSFORD STAKES. CAN GLOAMING COME BACK? ' SYDNEY, Sept. 12. Ihe fact that Ballymena’s run in the Chelmsford Stakes to-morrow may be his last appearance adds interest to the race, _ but chief interest centres in the question whether (Roaming, after a period of six years,' will he able to repeat his Chelmsford Stakes victory of 1918. With the field he has to meet, even should he secure the verdict it is unlikely to be the runaway win he scored on the previous occasion. CONFOUNDING CRITICS. NEW ZEALAND HORSES IN SYDNEY.

SYDNEY, Sept. 5. Ante-post- betting on the big spring handicaps is now assuming definite form. New Zealand horses figure largely in the calculations of the layers and backers, particularly The Hawk and Glentruin. Nigger'Minstrel, who is over for the A.J.C. Derby, also commands great respect from the ringmen. They still have in mind the win of Ballymena in the last A.J.C. blue riband event. Glentruin astounded the early morning visitors at Randwick yesterday morning by . a sensational gallop. She ran five furlongs in 1.1, which is little short of racing time. It indicates that she is in the pink of condition. With the Derby winner Ballymena for a companion, the mare went right at her top, and/though conceding him a start, completed thq. five furlongs a head to the'good in the fast time of 1.1. She did the last half-mile in 49f sec. The old champion Gloaming also confounded the critics yesterday morning on the tracks. He covered a. mile, with A. Reed up, in 1.465. He did not break evens for the first couple of furlongs, but at the six-furlong post Parody joined him and raced with Gloaming till near the final furlong. Here Gloaming cleared out and won easily. From the six-furlong post the distances timed were: One furlong in 12see, two in 231 sec, three in 36iseo, four in 484 see, five in I.ls, and the full six in 1.16. The Derby candidate Nigger Minstrel is also doing nicely. He galloped on -the track yesterday morning • and showed good form. Some difficulty was experienced when the boat on which he travelled across frpm the Dominion was unloading in Sydney. Nigger Minstrel refused to huge off the deck into the special sling box which ivas to_ lower him to the wharf. It was 20 minutes before he consented to allow the ship’s crew to unload him. The ex-New Zealander Farceur, which is a Metropolitan candidate, is also in the limelight. He ran six furlongs at Kensington track in 1.17. Latest quotations show Triniacre as absolute favourite for the Epsom. Glentruin, Valiant, The Dancer and Cliffdale are next in order. In the Metropolitan Mirthmaker commands most respect, then comes The Cypher and Tomatin, the English horse. Early betting on the Derby has Nigger Minstrel favourite with Heroic, last season’s champion two-year-old in Australia.—Auckland Star.

GLENTRDirf. NOMINATION TANGLE. . SYDNEY, Sept. 5. The entry of Glentruin for the Epsom and other races at the spring race meeting in Sydney has, despite the disqualification of one of the part owners, been accepted. The circumstances of the case were unusual, and the decision of the A.J.C. -was the only equitable solution to the tangle. Mr P. D. Jones, the New Zealand trainer punished by the A.J.C. .stewards for the running of Royal Despatch, appeared as one of the .part-owners of Glentruin in the entries for the Epsom Handicap, along with Messrs Chisholm and McDonald. Disqualification of the owner, under A.J.C. rules, renders the nomination of all his horses void, and under rule 69 no transfer of such engagements can be made to avoid this point. The A.J.C., however, communicated with the New Zealand controlling body, and it was learnt that while Jones’ name appeared as an owner he had no proprietorial interest in the mare. He merely received a third of the stakes as his share of the training. Jones notified the A.J.C. of this fact when he was under the cloud of disqualification. The A. J. C. have therefore decided to allow r Glentruin to run, and, presuming that she wins Taces, no protest on these grounds will be considered.—Auckland Star,
