CROATIAN STAMPS.

NEW ISSUES OBTAINED IN

LONDON

The Kingdom of the Serbs, Croats, and Slovenes has obtained its newest stamps from London, and they prove to be a handsome series printed from jntaglio plates (writes Fred J. Melville in the Daily Telegraph). In general design the lower values follow the previous American-printed issiie in showing a profile of King Alexander to the • left on an oval medallion, but the head .is much larger. and allows better scope to the engraver to present a good portrait. In the new pattern, being taken entirely from Serbian motifs, instead of the conventional ornamentation of the earlier issue. It was originally intended that the entire series should be m this one design, but among the essays submitted by the printers was one which, in place of the oval medallion, has the profile in a. square panel, which shows up the portrait to still better advantage. As this was so pleasing a result the Serbian authorities decided to use it for-four of the denominations.
