5 -o JL CJ 2 Ins 6 /r»5 ->i TO STOP HALVES SUCKING. The use of .the contrivanoe illustrated herewith will prevent a calf from sucking its mother. It is made as follows: —Out of a piece of galvanised iron 5 inches long bv 4 deen cut a 2-ineh square piece from the'side. File off or otherwise dull the cut edges at AA, go' that they form a small tube, which will carry freely a piece of fencing wire B, sharpened at one end to a neat point, and with a small loop at the other. Fix this to the calf’s nose by running the wire B through one side of A, then through the thin part of the cartlige of the animal’s nose, and through the other side of A, bending over the point of the wire to prevent its working out. Hanging freely on the salt’s nose will stop the calf sucking, and it soon learns to feed behind it. Both the wire and the galvanised iron should be heated in the fire for five minutes or so, and then cooled again before putting the arrangement on the calf, to prevent any possibility of the nose festering through dirt being on the iron or pin. In the case of driving a calf with its mother to market, sticking may be prevented by slipping on the calf’s nose a piece of thin tough board, cut as in C. This would not be of much use on a big calf, as it would soon get knocked off, but as a temporary check it is very handy.
