WIN FOR NORTH ISLAND
GOOD COMBINATION.
(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION 1 NELSON, Sept. 9.
The North v. South Island match, played this afternoon, resulted in a very fine display. Although the teams had not played together before, the splendid combined movements among the forwards and heady- play by the backs made the game most interesting.
The result- was three to two in favour of the northerners, but with a trifle of luck.in the last quarter of an hour the game might have ended in a draw.
A few’ minutes after the start Hei took to the South circle, where, after the shot had been saved by the goalkeeper, Hill put- through ofl: a. rebound. Then H. Horner enabled Maude to equalise, but the Northerners soon regained the lead, Hei goaling. Before the end of the spell Booth gave the North a lead of tjiree to one. The second , half saw* clever play in both -forward .divisions. Eventually Horner beat the- goalkeeper. The closing stages were very exciting, South making a desperate attempt to score, but North retained the advantage. For the winners, Hei was the outstanding forward, Hill, MacDonald and Newey. being also prominent. Of the South players Burt was the mainstay of the backs, and Clarke, Ashley and Horner of the forwards.
Mr Kirkpatrick, president of the local association, donated four hockey sticks for the best back and forward of each team, and these were won by MacDonald (Auckland), Hei (Poverty’ Bay), and Burt and Claivfee (Southland).
