l. quin Wins his match

(BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.)

AUCKLAND, Sept. 9

There were good weather conditions to-day for the continuation of the .New Zeaeland golf championship tournament at the Middlemore Jinks, and some good play was witnessed in the principal events. The course and the greens were in fairly good order. Sixteen competitors met in the second round of the amateur championship event. The first of these contestants were R. 0. Gardner and G. F. Gunson, and they had to play an extra hole to reach a decision, Gunson winning by superior putting in even circumstances.

The best match of the series was that between T. H. Horton and-R. D. Wright. It was in every way a splendid contest, Wright (a young Aucklander winning one up.

A distinctive feature of the match between J. L. Black and J. C. Bidwell was the sensational recovery made towards its close by Black, who transformed an apparently certain defeat into a narrow victory. The present holder of the championship, ■J. Goss, of Wanganui, had an easy win against C. A. Seymour (a Christchurch representative), but it was a matter of promise for subsequent results that Goss regained something like his true form. In the other matches the winners were not seriously challenged.

Some very fine golf was displayed hy the competitors in the semi-finals of the professional championship. E. J. Moss, of Auckland, first succeeded in defeating G. B. Forest, thus securing an opportunity of whining the double championship. His rival'in the final will be J. Mclntosh, who decisively defeated R. C. Butters.

INTERESTING RESULTS

GENERALLY HIGH STANDARD

L. QUIN’S GREAT FINISH.

Yesterday’s play, while it showed a number of very hollow victories, notably in the case of J. Harold, J. Goss, H. B. Lusk and ' A. E. Coirway, provided several sensational finishes. Four of the matches were.won hy the narrow’ margin of one up, and one ■went, to the 37th hole.

That of greatest interest to Taranaki players was the fine recovery of L. Quin, who, after being two down' iii the morning, came to light,in brilliant 'style, '.awl doing a fifst nine holes in 3d, went on to no the next six iii one under fours, despite improved play by his opponent, R. M. George, a player of much greater experience and more accustomed also to the course. . The match between J. L. Black and Bidwill was expected to be close, because both are leading. Wellington players and have had niany a close game. Unexpectedly, however, Black could not quite strike form in the morning, and, continuing just behind his opponent, was three down and four to go, when lie came to light witli a sensational burst and won the last, four, ■winning by fa margin of one up. Gardner, who had beaten A. Duncan, played a great game against his club mate Gunson, and took him to the 37tli hole before being forced to acknowledge defeat. The South'Auckland champion, T. H. Horton, who w r as considered a likely winner, had to lower his colours to R. I>. Wright, the Auckland crack, who just got home by one up. The two Wanganui players, Harold and Gcss, both brilliant mutch players, had runaway wins. The latter, last . year’s amateur champion, is reported to have struck his best form. The match between him and Black to-day should be a good one, and the winger will probably not be far out at the conclusion of the, competition. If players show anything like the form of yesterday the results to-day generally will be 'very close and interesting.

In the professional contests Forest created much interest by his fine play against Moss, doing 74 in the morning and finishing two up. In the afternoon he continued to press the champion, and after being all square at the loth, finished a great game one down.

Mclntosh had a comfortable win from Butters, and should, with any luck, give the open champion a great tussle for the final.

The third round "will be played today and it is expected there will be some great golf played. The semi-finals will be played on Friday and the finals on Saturday. The professional final will be plaved on Fridav. .
