WAR IN CHINA
FIRING NEAR SHANGHAI
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION —COPYRIGHT (Received Sept, 10, 9.55 a.m.) LONDON, Sept. 9.
The latest news from Pekin reports that although the Kiangsuites continue to press hard at Liuhuo and have gained a. sniall amount of ground, the Chekiangites fire still holding on to the main positions there and continue to hold their own everywhere along the line. Last night a strong wind carried sounds of firing in the Swangtu sector to Shanghai. This fact- had probably something to do with" the volunteer mobilisation order and the decision to land marines. The nearest point to Shanghai at which the belligerents are engaged is approximately fourteen miles. The railway service between Sooehow and Nanking is being maintained. The French are erecting wire barriers in the streets leading to the Chinese city.— : Reuter. (Received Sept, 10, 10.35 a.m.)
PEKIN, Sept. 9. A special message from Liuho states that the Chekiangites have regained all lost ground in this sector and have commenced trench digging. Heavy rain stopped fighting on the main front in the "evening.—Reuter.
