The position at the close of the day’s nJny was as follows : Middlesex made 149 in the first innings, Surrey, in reply, having two wickets down for 221 (Sandham 102 not out). Sussex were all out for 60 in the first strike, Kilner capturing five wickets for 18 runs. Yorkshire declared with 253 on with nine wickets down (Holmes 88). Sussex, iii thensecond innings, made 83, Kilner taking seven wickets for 37 and Rhodes the other three for 20.
Kent hit up 199 (Seymour 81) in the first attempt, Parkin averaging six wickets for 50. To this score Lancashire replied with 136, Freeman taking ,! H' G°mg in again Kent made 110. Parkin’s average being six for 21. Lancashire’s second i strike produced 147 (Makepeace 72). Marriott took six wickets for 45. * ■ >
In the Gentlemen v. Players match, Gentlemen in the first effort scored 152 (H. Hay 55). MacDonald averaged six wickets for 59 and Parker four for 70. Players replied with 200, Meyer taking eight wickets for 38. Batting again, Gentlemen'made 52, Brown taking four wickets for 5 runs. Players have five* runs on for the loss of one wicket in the second innings. W arwiek beat Northampton on the first innings, and Glamorgan similarly defeated Nottingham. ENGLISH COACH FOR WELLINGTON. (BY TELEGRAPH—PRESS ASSOCIATION.? WELLINGTON, Sept. 3. The Wellington Cricket Association has secured the services of Captain,F. T. Badcock, of Wellington College, Berkshire, as coach. He is due to arrive from England this month, and will take up his duties at the commencenjent of the coming season. During the present season he lias performed well, both with the bat and with the ball. Among others desirous of obtaining coaching engagement in New Zealand are C. P. Buckenham (an old Essex (representative), George E. Wharmby (Bedfordshire 1900-1914), J. C. Hubble (Kent batsman and wicketkeeper), and Sutcliffe (this season’s English eleven).
