THE HAWERA OPERATIC SOCIETY.
The popularity which it has gained in the two sea Sons of its existence is reflected in the strong membership of the Hawera Amateur Operatic Society this year and in the keenness of members to do their best to make the opera which they have been practising for weeks past an outstanding success. The practices are * reported as being very encouraging, and in addition to the musical side of the work the society is now busy in learning to combine the singing with the acting, the producer being a man of wide ex! perienee and knowledge of the requirements. We are very glad that the society , is making such excellent progress, and, though in amateur theatricals there are always certain difficulties to be' overcome, the Hawera Society has been able to avoid many of them through its member® entering into their work in the right spirit. It is the spirit of such a society that is all important, for through it members establish friendships that last a lifetime, and so long as those taking part in the perform” ance remember that “the play’s the thing” so long, null they be able to maintain a good standard 1 of work aud bold the interest of the people. In the two previous seasons the operas produced were very creditably performed and were greatly appreciated by the audiences; this year it is hoped to achieve even greater .success, and if members concentrate upon their pracv rices this anticipation will he.realised. We look forward keenly to the performances, and we are sure that the people will give the society the generous support which it merits.
