TURNED DOWN.
RECRUITING FOR THE NAVY. (by TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 27. A letter from the Defence Department provoked considerable discussion at the Education Board meeting today. The letter stated that a petty officer of the Royal, Navy was travelling round the Dominion with a view to encouraging recruiting. Permission had been granted by the Christchurch and Nelson Boards for him to visit schools and address *the scholars. The letter asked for similar facilities. It was stated by a member that if the board granted the request it would establish a dangerous precedent. Schools would have to he opened up to others. Other members thought that as we owed a great debt to the Navy, and as schools were Government in--stitutions, the facilities sought should be granted. The chairman: We don’t want children taken away from the primary schools. The request was declined.
