QUEER CATTLE.
CROSS WITH BUFFALOES
BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT I OTTAWA, Aug. 24. A telegram from Edmonton says that queer cattle with ; hairy manes and double woolly coats will soon be grazing on relatively barren tundra a thousand miles north, according to Sir Robert Greig (chairman of the Scottish Board of Agriculture) who pre T dieted success tor Dominion experiments with crossbred cows and buffaloes, when addressing the agricultural section of the British Association for the Avan cement of Science. He said that generally the plough was twenty times as efficient as an animal in producing food in a given area, but aniJpuls can make available territory of little use 1 for crops.. He added: “As soon as we get some buffalo blood into a cow there will he an extensive live stock development in the northern areas. The anatomy of a cow can be altered to the extent of producing the long fine coat of hair of game animals so that ice may freeze on the longer hairs without chilling the beasts. The second object is to develop shaggy manes and heavy eyebrows, so the animals may turn ‘into the wind without discomfort.”
