. bbe NN.C.'I.U. held a most successful and largely-attended social evening in the ITesbyterian Hall on Friday. The hall had been tastefully decorated with soring flowers and foliage. The social opened with the singing of a verse of the National Anthem, after which the Rev. Mr Elans, who acted as chairman, engaged in prayer. He also congratulated those present who were already members of the union on. the noble work they were doing. Mr Bone, the Mayor, in a short, impressive address encouraged the workers, emphasising the fact that it was a world-wide movement, embracing all countries of the world. An excellent programme was much enjoyed, the following contributing: Recitations by Mrs Robb and Miss Hill; duets by Mr and Mrs Cate and Misses Grindrod: solos by Mrs Bigham, Mrs Cate, Mrs Grindrod, and. Miss Yelvin. An anthem by the Methodist Choir was much appreciated. Special thanks are due to Mrs Taylor and Mrs Bigham, who accompanied the singers. An apology was received from Mr Dixon, regretting not being able to attend. A novel and interesting competition was won by Mrs Bourke. A collection was taken ui) on behalf of the union funds. A pleasant evening closed with the Benediction.
