IN BANKRUPTCY.
FAILURE OF CARPENTER. With, a financial deficiency of £9B 14s lOcl and a judgment summons against him, Edmund Lord, cairpenter, ot New Plymouth, appeared before the deputy Official Assignee in bankruptcy (Mr J. S. Medley) yesterday afternoon. 'ihe only creditor represented was Mrs E. B. Chiklerstone. Bankrupt s financial statement showed a total sum of £I.OB 4s lOd owing to unsecured ereduevrs. A sum of £3u 10s owing to the Repatriation Department wa s secured by furniture valued at 650, leaving a surplus of £J9 Rj s as debtor s only assets. The deficiency, therefore, was £9S 14s Rkl. Amongst the .unsecured creditors were: P. J. Collins, Okaiawa, £l9 17s (id; H. J.ord, Patea,_£2B 10s; J. Hudson, Hawera, £3 <s 6d; A. Pickering, Hawera, £2 75.;. Dr. A LGhie, Hawera, €2 4s; Repatriation Department. \Ye.l.nigion, £3O 10s.
Bankrupt, in his written statement, said that in J. 922 he was in Hawera, working at his trade whenever he could. During that year work in the building line was very slack, and he was forced io take whatever odd work he could get, two of the jobs being as a briek.ayer’s labourer at i4s a day,, and relief work at 11s a day. He spent four months at his trade working for 2s 4cl an hour, with sometimes no work at all. The money earned was not enough -o pay his way, and be got into debt, in February, 1923, he came to New Plymouth, and had been working at uis trade since fc*r 2s 4cf an hour. At two different times he had been out of work, ancl he had also lost- time through \vet- weather and holidays. The money he earned had gone to pay off back debts and living expenses. Through one of his creditors forcing aim he bad’ to file.
Examined under oath, bankrupt stated that- he was a married man with two children. He estimated that it cost him about £4 a week to live. He was in employment with a contractor in New Plymouth at the present time, earning 2s 4d an hour, but ol course did not work in wet weather. He bad not kept a banking account for four years. He was forced fo file on account of a judgment summons against him. He was paying 25s a week rent. He could make no offer to his creditors. The meeting was adjourned sine die. —News.
