CRICKET.
SOUTH AFRICA v. ENGLAND. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT Received Aug. 19, 11.15 a.m. LONDON, Aug; 18. The whole trend of the game changed after lunch through Commaille badly missing Hendren at square leg. England, with only 146 runs for four wickets, had lost Sutcliffe, Hobbs, Hearne, and Woolley, Pegler was bowling magnificently. In one spell of six overs five were maidens, and one run was scored and two wickets taken. Hendren added five after lunch, and hit Pegler easily into Commaille’s hands, and ten runs later Susskind dropped him. Hendren’s play was sparkling, especially his pulls and cover drives. Sandham was most impressive. Woolley’s was the most valuable innings of the day. He hit eight fours and was in seventy minutes, showing that he is at present at the zenith of his form. England’s third hundred appeared for 254 minutes’ play. A thunderstorm ended play. Probably to-morrow Woolley and Tate will worry the Africans an a. wet wicket.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn.
