OHAWE ROAD.
(To the Editor.) Sir, —l notice in Saturday’s night’s Star a note re deputation which waited on the Hutt County Council re road improvements. They handed over a certain amount of money toward the cost, and were promised that the work would he put in hand. Sir, I wonder if these gentlemen will he disappointed. There are two bad pays, they say —the fellow who pays beforehand* and the fellow who does not pay at all. I have distinct recollections of a deputation of Ohawe beach residents waiting on the Hawera County Council with a request for some very urgentimprovements to the road to Ohawe. A cheque for a tidy sum was paid over to the council, with a promise of a further sum. I lie deputation received a sympathetic hearing and a promise of improvements practically immediately, hut nothing has been done; in fact, that road has never in my knowledge, extending over many years, been "so had, and to say the very least is a disgrace to the council which controls it. Sir, f have a cottage at Ohawe, and should like to go down and see if the wandering stock have left it standing, hut the road is impassable to anything hut a gravel dray, so T stay at home and chance it. Sir, do yon think that if that deputation had dropped a few loose pound notes around it would have roused our council to action;-' Do von think there is a chance of anything being done before the end of the'year? Thanking you in anticipation.—T am, etc., OHAWEITE. Hawera. August 16.
