In conversation with an Otago Daily limes leporter on Friday 'evening, a local business man,-who is well-known m shipping circles, said that he ha 1 sailed in various types of both small and large vessels in all kinds of weather, but his experience in the "feiiy” steamer Alaori on the trip from Weiliiigton to Lyttelton oh "WednesdcW night was one which he would not forget for some time to come. The Alaori was being driven into a head sen,, and no one had anything t-o fear except discomfort, but on a previous occasion when he travelled bv her the sea was on her beam, and he did not enjoy the. experience, a* she was some time in recovering herseif, although he was not, and had never been, seasick. In his opinion the travelling public ■was responsible for t-lie rolling of such vessels, as it- insisted on having deck cabins, and consequently tiers and tiers were built above the vessel’s decks. He did not to- infer that- the Alaori had too much deck hamper, but lie expressed the opinion that” •K)0- or S(H) tons of pig iron, or other si/.tble ballast, would remedy the vessel’s tendency to roll when driving against heavy seas.
