DEATH OF INSPECTOR.
ALLEGED MANSLAUGHTER. (ny TELEGRAPH PRESS ASSOCIATION.) WELLINGTON, Aug. 13. Evidence for the prosecution in the manslaughter charge against Frank McDevitt, concerning the death of Traffic Ihspector Cross on the Hutt Road on April 26, was concluded to-day. Accused denied that he was speeding, in proof of which he said lie had travelled from Trenthani to the place of the accident in time which gave an average of a little over 14 miles per hour. Cross had suddenly appeared in front of the car. Accused said he swerved and tried to avoid striking Cross, and he thought he had managed to clear him.,
Witnesses said • Cross was at first outside the beam of the light from accused’s car and then stepped forward. It was impossible for McDevitt to stop the car and avoid a collision. Other witnesses said Cross was standing in the middle of the road.
