VALEDICTORY.

SUPERINTENDENT AV. FOUHY. WANGANUI CITIZENS’ TRIBUTE. There was a large and representative gathering of citizens at the Rutland Hotel yesterday morning, when an official farewell was tendered to superintendent W. Fouhy, who is retiring on superannuation from the police force. ' The Mayor, Mr. Hope Gibbons, said : “The police are an integral part of the community, and their influence is for the welfare of the whole of the city. The superintendent is the head of the force. It is his duty to give a lead in the tone and the general manner in which the force exercises its powers. They had very wide powers, and could use these in a dictatorial way, or they could use tact and obtain the same result, and also retain the confidence of the public. Superintendent Fouhy certainly carried out his duties in this manner, and has retained the full confidence and respect of the whole community. The assistance given by the police in our traffic regulations has been most helpful, and we hope that this will be continued and increased.”

After addresses had been delivered by a number of representative citizens, the Mayor, on behalf of the citizens, presented Superintendent Fouhy with a wallet and a dinner service, and wished the superintendent and Mrs. Fouhv long life and happiness. Superintendent Fouhy returned his best thanks for the kind things that had been said, and the presents he had received. It was necessary for him to go to Christchurch, but they need not be surprised if he returned to Wanganui. He was very sorry to leave. He came as a stranger, lint he had never met more genial people. There had always been the best of good feeling for the police. He wished Wanganui every good prospect with happiness for its people. Superintendent Fouhv’s health was honoured, and a pleasant little function concluded with the singing of Auld Lang Syne and the Xational Anthem.
