NEW GOVERNOR-GENERAL. PROBABBLY SIR J. M. DE ROBECK. BY CABL3—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT LONDON, Aug. 8. The Daily Mail says it is expected that Vice-Admiral Sir John Michael Robeck, K.C.8., G.C.M.G., will succeed \ iseount Jellieoe as Governor-General of New Zealand in November. It is believed the appointment, will be made in response to New Zealand’s wishes. Sir J. M. de Robeck to-day interviewed Mr J. 11, Thomas (Secretary of State for the Colonies). - Vice-Admiral Sir J. M. Robeck, who is 62 years of age, is unmarried. He has had a distinguished naval career, being Commander-in-Chief of the Mediterranean fleet since 1919. Entering the Royal Navy as a cadet at the age of 13, he progressed step by step along the ladder of promotion. In 1885, after ten years at sea, he was appointed lieutenant, in 1897 commander, in 1902 captain, in 1911 rear-admiral, and in 1917 vice-admiral.
The prospective Governor-General has a link with the Dominion, in that he commanded the naval force at the Dardanelles during the time the expeditionary forces were landed on the Gallipoli Peninsula in 1915. His chief recreations are hunting and shooting.
