PERSONAL ITEMS.
On account of ill-health, the,Rev. R. Fairmaid, who was ordained in 1890, has resigned his position at South Dunedin Presbyterian Ghuirch. The many friends of Mr. H. W. Swinburn will regret to hear that he is in Craigholm private hospital suffering from septic poisoning. Mr. V. S. Little, of the Auckland telegraph office, has taken up duty at the Hawera office as supervisor of the Telegraph branch, in place of Air. F. L. Connnold, who was recently appointed postmaster at Morrinsville.
The many friends of Miss D. Pitt, assistant teacher at Fraser Road School, who has been an inmate hf the Hawera Public Hospital for several weeks, will be pleased to learn that she ( was discharged from that institution to-day. Miss Pitt intends leaving for Auckland shortly ifco recuperate her health.
After practice last evening members of St. John’s choir entertained their departing organist and choirmaster (Mr L. 11. Goddard) at supper. Mr A. Hunter presided, and on behalf of the choir made a presentation to Mr Goddard, referring in glowing terms to his work in building up the choir during the time he had been in Hawera. Mr Goddard suitably responded, the gathering terminating with the singing of Auld Lang Syne. One who was formerly a well-known figure in the building trade in Wellington, Air James Reid, died con, Wednesday morning after a brief illness. The late Mr Reid, who was 68 years of age, was at one time a pairtner of Air Richard Keene, of Island Bay, and, with Mr Keene, was connected with many enterprises concerning Wellington and country property. Air Reid, who was of a bright, genial disposition, and popular in business circles, leaves a widow and adult family. One of Palmerston, North’s earliest settlers, in the person of All* William Joseph Archer, died on Saturday, at the age of 66 years. The late Air Archer, in the early ’nineties, was connected with the U.F.C.A., and he had a wide acquaintanceship, both in town and country. He is survived by his widow and only daughter (Mrs AlcCrea). The Rev. T. G. Brookes, of the Pitt Street Methodist Church, Auckland, has retired from active work after a ministry of forty-four years, during fifteen of which he held the position of general secretary of the home mission and church extension department. He was presented with an illuminated address expressing the appreciation, esteem and affection in which he is held throughout the Dominion. A substantial cheque accompanied the address.
