(Irom Our Own Correspondent.) HIBERNIANS’* BALL. Hie annual ball of the Manaia branch ot the Hibernians, which was held in -lanaia Town Hall last "Wednesday night was ns usual a decided -success, over I/O being present locally and from an parts of the district. The hall and the stage were beautifully decorated, also the supper room and tables, the former by Misses M. Long and M. Kogan, and the tabes by Mrs. R Don<»hl. A first-class supper was provided p W a well-organised ladies’ committee, t nntier direction of Mrs. M. Landers consisting of Mesdames E. Long, J. Hickey, A. J. Hansen, T.'Dee, J. S. McKay, J. A. G. Cosgrove, M. Kepped, I<. Mourie. H Sutton, W Dugn' Vine - F - c ° bb ? J- Meldon, J. Russell, J. A\ eider, J. Kavanagh, M. t ™' vn ' Howard J. Landers, Misses j Iveppell, Milner, Bourke, .an c | Cobh. A j fil’st-class floor was provided, and Cos- | grove s special orchestra rendered capij tal music, which was much appreciated and numerous encores were demanded uumig the evening. Extras were played j hV many willing helpers, and these were also much .appreciated. Messrs F M Landers, E. Long, T Walsh,' and L Mudford very ably fulfilled their important positions pf M.C.’s. The hall Was in every detail well organised and equally well carried out. The object this year was in aid of the new Ma- ; naia Convent school building, and the result was most satisfactory The society extend their thanks to the ladies’ committee, also all who in anyway assisted and those who so kindly donated the catering, Catholics and other denominations, which the committee much appreciated. The ball terminated in the early hours of Thursday morning, everyone present having thoroughly enjoyed it. SOCIAL EVENING.
On the eve of her approaching marriage Miss L. Jones was gicen a social jUid kitchen evening in the Manaia lown Hall on Friday. There was a large attendance of friends and wellwishers. Miss Jones, who will be departing from Manaia to reside in Hawera. was presented on behalf of the Guild of St. Cuthbert’s Church with a beautiful travelling rug. The vicar Rev. A. C. Swainson, in making the presentation, eulogised the splendid \\ork of Miss Jones in connection with St. Cuthbert’s Church. . The recipient had lived almost the whole of her life in Manaia, coming to Manaia a s a small girl, and she had endeared herself to all by her kindly disposition. She always took a keen interest in church work and was a most popular young lady. He wished her and her future husband every success. Mr. Corry, on behalf of Mis s Jones, heartily- thanked the vicar for his A'erv kind utterances, also the very handsome present given by St. Cutkbert’s Guild, and all who had brought so many nice and valuable presents that evening. The recipient would cherish them and they would remind her of her many'- kind friends in Manaia. Mr Lorry stated that whatever work Miss Jones had done for St. Cuthbert’s Church Avas .a labour of loVe, and once again he thanked all present for the splendid farewell evening. “For they are jolly good fellows” Avas heartily sung by all. A splendid programme Avas submitted during the evening, vocal items beiimgiven hv Mrs C. Abbott, Messrs Cotterill and Gardiner, recitations by Mr Forester, fancy dances by Misses- K. Hickey and, Berry, and double hornpipe by Misses Duncan and Berry. All these items were well received and. in eA'ery case encored. The accompaniments were played by Messrs C. Abbott. Cotterill, and Miss K. Cosgrove. Capital music was supplied for the dance by Airs P. F. Hammonds Airs C. Abott, Aiiss AI. Long, Aliss M.’Hansen, Messrs C. Abbott, E! Lloyd. J. Cosgrove, T. Hotter, Cotterill, and Matherson. A great variety of kitchen utensils Avere presented to Miss Jones, and Avere on view in the hall. The vicar heartily thanked all Avho had come and made the evening such a success; also all. Avho had assisted with the capital programme rendered, Aihich every-one thoroughly appreciated, and all who assisted Avith the music of the dance programme, and / the Ladies’ Guild for their good ivork. A A'erv enjoyable eA'ening came to a close at midnight, by the singino- of “Auld Lang Syne.”
I* l fhe report of the Manaia Farmevs’ Union .social and presentation of prizes, held at Manaia last Friday "eek, Mr Cotterill’s name was accidentally omitted. Mr Cotterill rendered a couple of vocal items, which were much appreciated. Mr A. G. Bennett, solicitor, Manaia, who kindlv gives a. donation of £1 Is annually towards the Boys’ and Girls’ Agricultural Club prizes for Manaia and district. should also have been mentioned in the report. pi general meeting held by the Manaia. Town Carnival Committee last week it was decided to hold a monster gala day in the Manaia Domain on Wednesday. September 24. Full particulars will he advertised in the Hawera Star at a later date. It was also decided to hold a monster tug-of-war at an early date in the Manaia Town Idall. Particulars will also be advertised in the Star.
