A COURT INCIDENT. I have had a. conversation with him, and he seems so simple that I don t think lie could form any intention,” remarked Mr. W. E. Leicester of an old man of uncertain financial resources, named Frederick Silk who appeared before Mr. E. Page, S.M., in Wellington on Friday, on a charge of stealing an oilskin overcoat Giving evidence, accused said'lie took the coat to prevent anybody else from stealing it. He intended advertising it later. The Magistrate convicted' him and ordered him to come up for sentence when called upon within twelve months. “You will have to pay 9s witness’s expenses,” ho said. “I beg your pardon!” defendant said. The Magistrate repeated his statement. “I will nay you as soon as I get the money,” replied Silk. Hie money was not long forthcoming, for the hat was passed round at the of the court, and the spectators, who evidently possessed generous matures, quickly subscribed the money, and it was immediately paid.—Post.
