OFFENCE TOO COMMON. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.! WELLINGTON, Aug. 1. When a draper’s assistant, Wilfred Albert Wootten, appeared before the magistrate (Mr Page) for sentence on a charge of the theft of material from James Smith, Ltd., the probation officer said he could not recommend probation. The magistrate, in sentencing Wootten to two months’ imprisonment, said the public interest must be regarded. Accused had been in a position of trust, and had committed a series of thefts from his employers. This class of offence was becoming too common.
