TARANAKI REPRESENTATIVES. MATCH AGAINST MANAWATU. The Taranaki representative team to meet Manawatu at Stratford on Thursday next. August 7, will he chosen on Saturday evening. It is not expected (says the News) that the selectors will make many changes front the fifteen which defeated Wellington at Hawera early this month, but the fact that Alexander., the High School five-eighth, ami Nest, the Hawera and All Black forward, are not available, will necessitate some changes. It is also understood that Sinclair (Hawera) is available tor selection. It will probably be found that the team will be chosen from the following • Backs —Sinclair, McGregor, Cameron Hawera), Briar, Ennis, Oliver, Jeffries (lukapa), Johnston (Okaiawa), Ross V° utt ; s , (Inglewood),, and K. Meuli (Stratford). i * O’ltorke (Opunake) Tavlor (\\ annate), Robinson, N. Paterson Hawera) Kivell, Fryday, Walter (Stratford), McKay (Inglewood), L. Members of the Tainui Sub-union teani will also come under the selectors’ notice, and some members of that team may be included in the Taranaki representatives if their play justifies their inclusion. WEDNESD A Y COMPETITION. HAWERA v. KETEMARAE. decision disputed by latter 'TEAM. The fixture in the mid-week series between Hawera and Ketemarae was played yesterday, and ended half-way through the second spell in the latter team leaving the held hist after a try had been scored, which'put' Hawera in the lead. The play in the first spell * s lai gely in favour .of Ketemarae, u-ho, playing with the wind, pressed Hawera very hard, and as the 1 result ot penalties given two goals were scored fiorn the held by Heke, and at halftime the Maoris led bv six points Hawera, however, had bad hick in not scoring once when they got right on to the opposing goal line. In the second spell play was very fast and keen, both sides striving hard to score. At ength after play had veered up and downfield for some time. Hawera forwards rushed play into their opponents’ quarters, and just failed to score a trv. Ketemarae retaliated, and went upheld m great style. Back came Hawera, and in a good position a penaltv was given them, and Munro kicked a' goal. Keeping up the pressure thev worked down towards the line, and Foster securing from the loose dashed across and scored a good try. With scores e\on both sides strove hard to score, i he ball came out to the Hawera backs and was kicked into Ketemarae territory. where Weir, galloping up fast, took well and galloped over the line and grounded it behind the posts. The kick failed. Ketemarae disputed the decision of the referee, and after some korero left the held, and the nlav concluded at that point. Hr T. Grant was referee. WHABEROA (9) v. MEBEMERE (6).

'the above game was played at \\ hareroa yesterday, resulting as above alter a very even struggle, Whaferoa scoring three unconverted tries and Meremere a try and a goal from the held. (I. Murphy scored two of the tries for the home team. and this young player shows great promise, being resourceful and speedy. Meremere bad several good forwards, and had their backs played as strenuously they might have reversed the decision. Mr Alex. Paterson gave general satisfaction as referee. EFFECT OF NEW RULES. . Concerning the English Rugby Lnion’s new rule for the tackle, which was recently published, the secretary of the Taranaki Rugby Referees’ Association communicated with the seeretary of the New Zealand Referees’ Association and inquired what difference there was between the new ruling and that outlined in the handbook of 1923. In reply it was stated that the new ruling in question was in conformity with the note in the handbook.

Another question was: The ball goes out’ of play, the side of whom it belongs throws it into play at an incorrect spot, and the referee, not noticing that the line-umpire’s flag is up, allows play to continue until a player takes a mark. His attention then being drawn to the line-umpire’s flag, which is still up, should the referee allow the mark or should play return and the ball be thrown out at the correct spot ? The answer given was that the mark should be awarded. If, however, the hall is thrown in at an incorrect spot, and the referee allows play to continue until he blows his whistle for an infringement, but before giving a rilling he notices the uffpire’s fla*g. up, he would be correct on this occasion in returning play to a line-out at the correct spot.
