MRS. W. JONAS. Mrs. M. Jonas, whose death was recorded recently, claimed that as a girl of eight she purchased the first eops of the Taranaki Herald offered to the ptiblic. It is interesting to note also that the name of her father, Mr. Wright Ruffler King, \va s attached to an advertisement calling a public meeting “to take into consideration the present high price of land, together with the means of reducing same,” which appeared ip |h£ third issue of the Herald, published ou August 18, 1852. Mr. and Mrs W. R. King arrived in the 'Amelia Thompson and their eldest daughter (Mrs. Jonas) was born in February, 1844. She wa s educated fn Mrs. S- P. King’s private school at New Plymouth, and "when the Maori war broke out went to Nelson with other members of the family. In February of 1864 she married Capt. Matthew Jonas, of the Volunteer Corps. After the war ended Capt. Jonas was engaged in farming at “Woodleigh,” on the Frankley Roadi. for a few years. About the year 1873 he took up land on the Tikorangi Road and farmed it until the time of his death. After that Mrs. Jonas resided in Waitara. It will thus be seen that she shared with hei; husband all the hardships of life during the pioneering days of Taranaki. Airs. Jonas brought up a family of four daughters and two sons. Four of these predeceased her, namely, Airs. C. Bayly, Airs. E. AValter and Alessrs. Arthur and Willie; the surviving members being Airs. J. B. Hine (Toko) and Airs. A. L. Wilson, of_ Waitara, while one sister, Aliss Annie King, still resides in New Plymouth. Airs. Jonas was a life-long worker in the Alethodist Church. —Herald.
