MOTOR FATALITIES.
CRASH INTO RIVER. DRIVER DROWNED. Further particulars of the motor accident at Stratford yesterday, resulting in the death of W. Schneider, junr., are given by the Stratford Post. From what can be ascertained, says the Post, bread from the car had been delivered into a box at the intersection of Beaconsfield and Ohura Roads and the car was returning to Stratford. The steering gear locked, and the car crashed through the fence and fell into the stream below, a distance of about thirty feet. Mr. Schneider was pinned underneath in “about 2ft. 6in. of water and was drowned. Messrs E. C. Tapp and A. Kean, of Hawera, and Mr. F. Schwann, the sexton at the cemetery, rendered valuable assistance in getting deceased from under the car, a task which, took 20 minutes. The body of the car wag extensively damaged. Deceased, who was about 20 years or age, was a son of Mr. W Schneider, of Cordelia Street. Stratford, and had been in Mr. Smith’s employ only two days. NEW PLYMOUTH FATALITY. After formal evidence had been taken the inquest into the death of Charles Evans, who was killed by a motor-car at New Plymouth, was adjourned until 10.30 a.m. on Wednesday next, to enable the police to olitain, if possible, the evidence of the driver of the motor which preceded McNeill’s car down Gover Street. BODY FOUND ON SOUTH ROAD. NEAR TOKAORA. Still another fatality in the district was reported to the police last night, the third within a day, when Mr W. Innes, on his way to Manaia, found the dead body of a man named John J. Doyle lying beside a motor-cycle and sidecar on the Main South Road, near the Waingongoro bridge, Tokaora. Mr. Innes found the body lying with the head under the running-board of the not. overturned. There were • signs of serious injury to the head, but it was impossible to say how the accident happened. The place where it occurred is well-known as a somewhat awkward turn on to the bridge. Mr. Tippett, of the Tokaora- factory, and Constable Mullan, who were on the scene shortly after the accident, stated that there were marks on the road indicating that the machine had skidded in endeavouring to regain the crown of the road. Mr. Doyle, who was a returned soldier, 31 years of age, was single, and had been in hospital for five years. He had a partially disabled leg*, and one theory is that this diability may have contributed towards the fall. The body wa s brought to Hawera. MOTOR-CYCLE. ACCIDENT. TWO MEN INJURED. Yesterday afternoon, in' the vicinity of the Manutnhi Gorge, a motor accident occurred. It appears that Messrs F. Lemm and E. Ingram were on their way in a motor-cycle and sidecar to the Levin district for a few days’ shooting. In some unaccountable way the front forks of the machine collapsed and the occupants were heavily thrown against the bank. Mr, Ingram escaned with three ribs fractured, which made necessary medical attention and removal to his home, Mr. Lemm was still less’fortunate, and suffered rather had facial injuries and also injuries to hi s leg. Mr. Lemm had to be conveyed to -the hospital.
