SERIOUSLY INJURED.
MINER’S TERRIBLE EXPERIENCE. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION,) HOKITIKA, July 17. Arthur Clifton, a well-known miner at Rimu and a former Westland County chairman, while engaged in sluicing operations at his claim at Back Creek this afternoon, was overwhelmed by a fall of earth from the face and washed into the sluice boxes to the end of the tail race, a distance 700 yards. When assistance’ arrived he was found to be seriously injured. Medical assistance was obtained and it was found necessary to carry the sufferer two and a half miles on a stretcher over rough tailings hefore an ambulance was utilised for his removal to the Westland Hospital. His injuries include a wide wound on the top of the head, concussion, much bruising and suffering from shock. His condition is serious, though he is showing a remarkable recovery.
