HUNTING.
SUCCESSFUL MEET AT MANAIA. INTERESTING SPORT. There has been many a gay and interesting gathering of hunting people and their friends at the MitehelL homestead, near Manaia, and yesterday’s was probably one of the best and jolliest. About fifty foregathered, and of these a large number were straightgoers, and enjoyed a series of runs which were keen and fast, and provided excellent jumping over the properties of Mr Mitchell and several of the adjoining owners. The hounds struck scent several times, and puss gave them a gallant run, falling a victim twice and getting away on the other occasions. The annual competition held was a thoroughgoing success, and. provided much capital jumping. Curiously enough most trouble came from a low sod wall near Mr Mitchell’s homestead, which no less than four horses struck, and which brought down one of the riders. At the conclusion of the run the most prominent were Mr 1). Crocker’s Tarraman, Miss B. Gibson’s Grey Dawn and Mr H. Raylis’ mount. The afternoon was most enjoyable, and thoroughly appreciated by spectators as well as riders. At the conclusion all the company were most hosiptably entertained by Mr and Mrs Mitchell, who were assisted in the job of looking after a large number of visitors and friends by Mrs J. S. McKay, Miss Mitchell and Miss Long. Before dispersing for the home journey, Mr D. Crocker, deputy master, expressed the hearty thanks of all for the pleasant day’s sport, and to the various owners for the privilege of hunting over their properties. He also expressed the appreciation of the kindly hospitality of the ladies. In acknowledging the compliment, Mr Mitchell said there had been mnnv a hunt over their property, he hoped there would he many more, and he could assure them that at all times members of the Hunt Club would always lie most welcome. This sentiment was also endorsed hv one-of the adjoining owners, who said his property would also be alwavs available Mr M itohcll. also announced that they hoped to have the next meet, the last of the season for the, northern end, over properties at Knnonga next Wednesday, and this would he notified to them on Monday. Before leaving, hearty cheers were given for Mr and Mrs Mitchell, for the other owners, and for the ladies, and a most interesting day’s sport came, to a happy conclusion.
