During an interval in the dance pro gramme, Mr J>. He referred to the part played by the guest of the evening in the business and social Fife ol the town, and to his activities in the realm of sport. B. Fearon to make a presentation to Mr Lloyd..

Air Fearon said that throughout the five years Mr Lloyd had been in Ivaponga- the gentlemanly qualities he had displayed in the pursuance of his professional duties as well as in his activities in sport, and' in the social life ol the district, had made him a very popular personality. The speaker knew lie was expressing the feelings oi all present in sayung he' greatly' regretted Air Lloyd’s departure.’ It was a fitting tribute to Air Lloyd’s popularity tliat the evening’s function, which had been hurriedly organised, was attended in such large' numbers. On behalf of the assembled friends, he had much pleasure in requesting their guest- to accept a suitcase and a travelling I’Hg sis mementos of the goodwil. of the people of the Kaponga district. Air Lioyd, in ait appropriate response, thanked the sneakers* for their kind remarks and the assembly for the- handsome gifts, and expressed the appreciation of the honour ..-..-aferred upon him by the gathering. He regretted exceedingly that he was departing from a clistrict which held so many 7 sincere friends. The five years lie had spent in the district had been most pleasant, owing to the courtesy which had always been extended by all with whom he had come into contact, and he would lie able to carry away the very happiest of recollections of his stay -in Kaponga. =• A dainty supper was' served bv a committee of ladies of the Tennis Club. Davies, and P. H. V. Harding. The inspector’s report on the school was received. The headmaster (Air. An exceptionally dainty supper wag enjoyed by the dancers, and the evening closed with the singing of For They are .Jolly Good Fellows.” town board meeting.

The monthly meeting of the Kaponga Town Board wag held last evening. There were present: Commissioners W. G. Cran (chair), L. Shepherd J. Dawson, R, Law, ' C. E. Betts, 'and Messrs A. E. Moss (electrical engineer) and G. P. Cook (clerk) The recommendations’of the Works Committee for sundry work for the current month were adopted. ilie report of the electrical engineer (Mr. A. E. Moss) as follows was adopted: On the 7th inst.. the pipeline repairs being sufficiently matured, the larger plant was again brought into commission. No. 1 turbine has been dismantled, scraped free from rust prior to painting the interior, and is now being lined up and glands repacked. 1. propose to cut off the town supply on Thursday to re-line a bearing, this being a full day’s work. Trees have been cut back at several places, and this should be a charge against the owners of the properties The line down Rowan Road is finished and the four residences connected. Awatuna line is completed and tin transformer erected and in use. Motors have been ordered and erection arranged. A visit from the fire underwriters’ inspectors was made on the Ist inst., and in consequence of a request by a ratepayer a detailed inspection of several installations of the original type made in the town area was carried out. it must be understood that these" are all seven or eight years old, and'the requirements of the underwriters have been .stiffened up very considerably in that period. All recent installations, some in wood casing as well, do conform with the rules. All work now is in steel conduit ami up to present stringent rules. To allay any uneasiness I propose that the rules printed by the Taranak : Power Board, embodying the latest requirements, should be adopted by this board, any wiromon employed in this area, to hold a special license equal to that issued bv the Taranaki Power Board. Referring to the break in the power which occurred on Saturday evening, the engineer explained that it had been

due to the action of some unauthorised person m closing the intake gate at the dam.

Consideration was given to the following recommendation received from the noundkeeper ; “That the board authorise that all owners of wandering stock whose stock be impounded be prosecuted, without exception, under clause 47 of the board’s by-laws.” • Commissioner Law thought it would be rather severe if first offenders were imriiediately prosecuted. It would be more fair if they were warned that a second offence would be followed bv a prosecution.

The chairman and Crs Dawson and Betts supported this view, the chairman lefernng to the difficulty in some cases of preventing stock from breaking down fences. The board must, however, act in the direction of keepmg the streets clear of wanderin'* stock. ‘ ” On the motion of Cr. Law. it was that in future all owners, »vhosc stock is impounded on more than one acoasion* be prosecuted. Defect i ve 1 nsta 1 la ti on s. A letter was received from a ratepayer. through his solicitor, advising that owing to defective electric and wiring installation at his residence, lie wd been notified by the insurance company that, unless the house was rovirecl to their approval, the insurances would be cancelled. It was stated that -bo defective installation had been carried out. bv tlie board’s original engiicer, the ratepayer therefore requiring -be board to have tlit* re-winu" el- : acted. The onginec-r intimated that the Installations bad been condemned as a result of the visit of the Fin* Underwriters’. inspectors. He thought that the wiring in. other residences and business premises within the board's irea required attention. The work, nowever, bad !>eon carried out privately >.v .the previous engineer and not by :ho hoard officially. In view of this, the chairman pointed out that the owners had no claim on the board. The clerk read a. report made by the underwriters’ inspector on October 3. 1916, which spoke highly of the standard of work obtaining under the supervision of the engineer, and expressed appreciation of his willingness to cnirv out and uphold the underwriters' re

quirernents. It was difficult to reconcile this with the report of the present inspector.

the engineer explained that Sineo that time the standard required by the Underwriters Association had been very considerably stiffened.

It was decided to advise the' ratepayer in question that, as the wiring had been arranged privately between the occupier of the house and the engineer, who in that work was not acting for the board, the board could not now accept responsibility in the matter. General. The agents of the Fox Film Corporation (Australasia) wrote with reference to thei-r proposal to produce a series of films depicting the scenic wonders and industrial activities of New Zealand, and asked that information relating to any points of interest he supplied.— The clerk thought that this scenic beauty of the approaches to Alount Kginont from the Kaponga side would offer a fine opportunity to t-lve photographer, and 'if filmed" would prove a inie advertisement for the district.— Commissioners concuried in this opinion, it being decided to draw the attention of the corporation to the matter. A circular letter was received from the Otane (Hawke’s Hay) Town Roaid, drawing attention to ihe Ordcr-in-Council gazetted on January 17. reducing the area of the- Otane’town district.

A letter was received from tin? holder oi a plot in lli« cemetery referring to tile action of other cemetery hoards in meeting (lie requests ol plot holders to have trees taken out. The winter asked that the hoard take action regarding the overgrowtii of trees surrounding the cemetery. —it was deckled to reply that tlie tieos would lie trimmed, hut that it was not considercd advisable that thov should lie removed altogether. It- was deckled to again draw the attention of the lintel licensee to the necessity of providing yard rubbish receptacles. .Accounts totalling £lOlO were passed for payment.
