Only 2000 were present at Hieadingly when the game opened, clue partly "to the 3s admission and partly to South Africa’s poor showing. The oppressive heat of Saturday was mitigated by a pleasant breeze. The South Africans treated Tyldesley’s slow balls with, respect, hut hit Macaulay, whom Tate replaced at 79. and quickly took four wickets, including Pegler and Blanokenberg, lvith successive balls, Carter preventing the hat trick. There was really no excuse for the South Africans’ hatting failure, as the wicket was perfect. The rout began when Susskind played late Gilligan’s yorker. Ward unluckily dragged on the wind-pitched ball, and Nourse was run out through hesitating. Hobbs throwing the wicket down. Catterall was going promisingly when ho was caught behind the wicket off Tate- Nupen met the same fate at the next ball.—Aus.-N.Z. Cnble Assn.
