WHITE INDIANS.

DISCOVERY IN PANAMA. SCIENTIFIC INVESTIGATION. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPS RIGHT NEW YORK, July 11. The anthropological staff of the American Museum of Natural History, following a most thorough examination of the so-called white Panama Indians, has issued a report declaring that they are Albine.s, atidjng that they are essentially similar to tile Albino types found among the South Americans and Indian peoples, as well as Italians and negroes. The staff herein disagrees with, the verdict of an independent body of scientists, who, after a. briefer examination, unanimously -hailed them as remnants of a proto-Nordic race. The museum authorities, however, have examined five normal members of the tribe, in addition to a so-called white girl and boy, finding the latter two distinguished by a great diminution of pigmentation, but, discovering .a slight pigmentation in the hair and eyes. The report continues that hence they are not complete Albines, but complete Albinism is rare, adding': -‘lf this is a disease, it is not new nor confined to the tropics. These characteristics have been observed and recorded. in the Mexican and United States Indians.” Dr. Richard Marsh, who discovered these Panamas. Indians, asserts that 400 Albino Inuians live in the restricted San Bias area Herein, he thinks, lies unique interest, because it had been estimated that there was one Albino in a population of 10,000. A message from Colon, Panama, on June 14, stated that- the centuries old theory of so-called blonde Indians might shortly be established as the result of the report that an American expedition exploring the Darien jungles during the past five months had succeeded in the quest. A message from the leader. Dr. Richard Marsh, stated: “I shall be ready to sail for New York in three weeks, accompanied by the King of the Darien Indians and two white Indians, a boy aged 19 and a girl aged 21. They are golden-haired, blue-eyed, and white-skinned. Their bodies are covered with long downy white hair. They are not the standard Albino type, but appear primitive Nordic whites.. We discovered evidences of an ancient civilisation and secured a fine ethnological collection of moving pictures.”
