RATANA’S PARTY ON BARABOOL. THE REASONS EXPLAINED. Extracts from a letter from Ratana’s son throw further light, on the disturbance on tne steamer, Barabool between Ratana s party and the Rhodesians. The origin of the trouble (states the writer) was at Durban, where Ratana. in a sympathetic, mood, did not like the way on the Kaffirs on the wharf were treated, and he ordered a spread with plenty of kai for the Kaffirs. This caused irritation among tlie passengers who joined the boat at Durban, and the friction developed on the run Home. The writer also mentions another incident on the run from Australia to Durban. The Ratana, party were \ery popular with a section of the passengers, and were giving their services ungrudgingly at entertainments, and incidentally winning all the prizes. This created jealously with a section of the passengers. When Ratana heard this lie withdrew his party from all entertainments. A petition was then signed and presented to Ratana, asking hirn to reconsider the "matter. Ratana was in no hurry about giving a. decision, and it was two weeks before the company consented to again appear at entertainments on the-boat
