GERMAN INTRIGUE.
ELECTRIC POWER FOR IRELAND. A BIG SCHEME PROPOSED. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT. Received Julv 4. 9.25 a.m. LONDON, July 3. German intrigue to gain economic control of Ireland is arousing apprehension. The Irish Free State, failing to see dearly where the negotiations will lead, are inclined to grant the great Siemen’s syndicate a contract to harness the waters of the Shannon on a promise to supply sufficient electrical power for the whole of the Free State. The Germans, who with apparent innocence asserted that the Shannon alone could hardly develop sufficient power, now explain that they meant the Shannon and its many auxiliary rivers. The Government is practically bound to confer a monopoly on the German, syndicate if a survey of the river, costing £SOOO, confirms the German proposals as practicable.—Sydney Sun Cables.
