Rowdy scenes occurred during a. censure debate in the Assembly, resulting in several members being warned and Mr. Minahan being removed. The debate was adjourned till Tuesday. MANDATED NEW GUINEA. MELBOURNE, July A. The House of Representatives nega-| . tived a motion for the appointment of M a Royal Commission to inquire into the , administration of the mandated territory of New’ Guinea . Certain charges I j alleged maladministration. Mr. Bruce, in opposing the commission, declared ' that the charges had already been sub- k ject of an inquiry, and a commission * was unnecessary because the Commonwealth had secured from the Imperial Government the services of one of their most experienced officers in native administration—Colonel Ainsworth. He was instructed to make the fullest possible inquiry and render a frank report. Colonel Ainsworth bad been in New Guinea for some time, and his report was expected shortly. If it gave any indication that a commission was de- , sirable the Government would take ' steps to have the matter fully probed. ( TASMANIAN REVENUE. Received Julv 4, 10.30 a.m. \ HOBART, July 4. Hie State revenue for the year end-1 ed June 30 amounted to £2,447,743. an increase of £273,728 compared with'the previous year.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DISABILITIES OF EX-SOLDIERS. MELBOURNE, July 4. In the House of Representatives Mr. Bruce intimated that the Ministry had decided to appoint a Royal Commission to inquire whether the disabilities suffered by certain ex-soldiers were due to or aggravated by war service; also whether the present methods for arriving at soldiers’ pensions were all that could be desired.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. ALLEGED LIBEL. SYDNEY, July 4. The jury returned a verdict for defendants in the case in which A. N. Bishop claimed £20,005 from Smith’s Weekly fof alleged' libel ■ contained in articles published in that paper. The innuendos were declared to be that plaintiff was dishonest and corrupt in hig business' dealings, that he falsely represented himself in business relations, that he was an impostor and convicted criminal, and had been continually guilty of false pretences and fraudulent misrepresentation. Defendants pleaded not guijty, also truth, and that the articles were for the public benefit. At the conclusion of the case • Mr. Justice James intimated his intention, if the Minister thought it necessary, to give leave to -prosecute plaintiff on a charge of perjury. SUITABLE IMMIGRANTS. SYDNEY. July 4. Speaking at the Settlers’ League Conference, Dr. Horsfall said that, in building up Australia’s population they should studv the racial characteristics of immigrants, with a view to their assimilation among the' present population. He suggested that. Scots, Danes. Finns, Lithuanians, Letts, and some of the German peoples, notably the Bavarians would be the most, suitable to assimilate with the present, population. Canon Garland stated that more than half the supar cane growers in Queensland were Italians. GOBLE A NQ MoTNTRYE REWARDED. SYDNEY, Julv 3. The aviators Goble and Mclntyre have been granted £SOO and £950 respectively by the Commonwealth Government as a recognition of their services in a flight around Australia.
