REFEREES AND THE UNION. r\ a , niee ting of the Management Committee of cue Taranaki Rugby i-iiion held at Hawera yesterday discussion was given to the position that has arisen as the result ot the decision of the North Taranaki Reeferees’ Association to strike es a. protest against the alleged leniency shown' by the Union in dealing with players reported tor offences by the referees A Jett ? r ™ nve ying the resolution was lead. The chairman (Mr McLeod) reviewed the position, and intimated that m the' event of the failure of the Union to arrange an amicable settlement with tiie disputants, volunteers were being called for in order to have referees available. The committee had to consider whether or not the union should agree with the attitude adopted i.V the North Taranaki Referees’ Association, and whether the referees had the right to dictate to the union in its control of the ganu. As a question of procedure, the point was raised that the North Taranaki Referees Association snould have forwarded its complaint through the Taranaki Referees’ Association, and until this was done the union should not deal with it. After full discussion of the. matterleading on to the decision of lljo referees to protest to the union, the following resolution was carried: ‘‘That while noting that the comnlaint lias not come through the proper'channel (the laranarfi Referees’ Association), au<l wishing to preserve amicable relation; with all sections of the Referees’ Association, this union considers that it lias dealt adequately with offenders in the past and will continue to deal with each, case on its merits in future, and to give referees adeouate protection ” it was also decided that the North larnnaki Referees’ Association be informed that in the event of their desiring further consideration of the matter they should communicate with tli* Union through the Taranaki Referees’ Association. 1~~ I ~~- ==•-
