SPECULATIVE BUILDING.
A NEW .METHOD. (By Telegraph.— Special to Star.) WELLINGTON, July 2. Residential building is going on at a moderate pace in Wellington, though the speculative builder has adooted a cautious variation on his former enterprising methods. Instead of building houses completely on spec, it is reported that building to order has taken its place to a large extent, particularly in the eastern suburbs. The house is not built and offered to any man who may come along. The section is there, and the man who null build to order says to prospective clients: “Here is a place (standing on another section) which I will, repeat for you in every detail, except that you may choose your own wallpapers, mantels, and so on, far such and such. You put down such and such hs a'deposit and we will arrange finance, on ridiculously easy terms.” Thus building operations do not commence till the deal is signed up. There were 58 permits issued for new dwellings during May.
