ST. JOHN AMBULANCE.
ANNUAL MEETING OF HAWERA BRANCH. The annual meeting of the Hawera branch, of the St. John Ambulance Association was held in the Borough Council Chambers last night, when Mr F. C. Spratt presided over a small attendance. The annual report was as follows: ‘‘At a well-attended public meeting at the "Borough Council Chambers on .June 6, 1923, at which Mrs Barltrop and Aliss Robieson, organisers from the Wellington Centre, were present, it was decided. to le-lorm tne Hawera Branch of the St. John Ambulance Association. A strong committee was set up and first aid classes for women and men commenced on June lit), with Dr. A. M. Young as lecturer and Mrs M. Dowling as class superintendent. Forty women and five men joined the classes, which apart from being instructive, proved most interesting. In September Dr. Thomson examined sixteen women candidates. Twelve gained their first aid certificates, Mrs Bernard and Miss N. Mills gaining highest marks, while Mrs Gifford-Moore was awarded the medallion, having passed the third year’s examination. The committee desire to record their thanks to Dr. Young and Dr, Thomson, who acted as lecturer and examiner respectively without charge to the association. Thanks are also due to the Director of the Technical School for securing the free use of the lecture room, ,and the proprietors of the Hawera Star for generous treatment in the matter o fadvertising. We also record with thanks the donation by Mr W. R. Shaw of a prize to the candidate securing highest marks at the examination.”—Adopted. Officers for the ensuing year were elected as follow:—President, Mr F. C. Spratt; secretary and treasurer, Mrs Claringbold; committee, Mesdames Dowling, Watts, Claringbold and Nicholas, Miss Mather, Messrs F. C. Spratt and G. Lidding ton and Dr. A M Young. fas stated that the committee would be obliged if those who wished to join either a home nursing or first aid class would send in their names to the secretary by. Tuesday night and attend a—meetmg the Borough Council Chambers on Wednesday night next. Votes of thanks were accorded Mrs Dowling, who had acted last year as superintendent, and Aliss A rather, who had fulfilled tin? duties of secretary. The meeting then closed with a vote of thanks to the chair.
