CHINESE BANDITS
MISSIONARY ESCAPES. BY CABLE—PRESS ASSOCIATION—COPYRIGHT HONGKONG, June 16. One of the kidnapped missionaries, the Rev. Ray. an American, escaped from the bandits during an unguarded moment while a heavy rainstorm swept the mountains, and after travelling all night reached Chiu Ping, to which a Chinese gunboat was despatched to assist him in his escape. Missionaries brought him to-Wu Chow. The Rev. E.- H. Carne, an Australian, is still a captive, having refused to attempt to escape. The bandits now demand £3OOO for his release.
