BURGLARS BUSY.

SAFE BLOWN OPEN AT AVONDALE. (BY TELEGRAPH —PRESS ASSOCIATION.) AUCKLAND, June 16. Burglars entered the office of the Avondale railway station on Saturday night- and blew open the safe with gelignite and stole Saturday’s takings, about ££so, mostly- silver coin. The manner in which. the_ explosives were used indicated that tne burglars possessed some skill. The police later arrested a young man and charged him with burglary. It is stated that the police searched his room and found part of the stolen money. One half of the strong-room door was blown off. ACCUSED BEFORE THE COURT. AUCKLAND, June 18. Edmond Edwin Rodburne Lutterill, aged 35, was charged at the Police Court with breaking and entering the counting-house of the Avondale railway station and stealing £56 12s 4d, the property of the Government railways. Accused was remanded without bail. Detectives Cummings, Robertson and Moon ascertained- that accused was in possession of more money than in ordinary circumstances. He found them sitting on his bed when he entered his room in a Queen Street hotel. Examination was made m his presence, and disclosed the money alleged to be part of that stolen at Avondale and other identifiable property taken from the safe. A box of cartridges and a catalogue _ detailing the working of an electric burglar alarm system were, also found on him. Mr. Poynton, S.M., remarked that those responsible- for the smart arrest should be congratulated. ATTEMPT AT PALMERSTON FAILS. PALMERSTON N.. June 16. An unsuccessful. attempt was made nieht to blow open the sale in the office of the local bacon company. The ’ock was damn mV but- not forced. The contained no money, the proceeds having been banked on Saturday.
