Chess Congress.
(Per Tress Association.) Auckland, Dee. 28. The Chess Congress was opened yesterday. Barnes (Wellington) defeated James (Wellington), Jewitt (Auckland) beat Telicore (Auckland), H. F. Smith drew with L. P. Smith (both Auckland), Grierson (Auckland) drew with W r ood (Auckland), Pleasants (Rangitikei) defeated F. H. Smith (Waimea), Howe a bye. To-day Howe defeated Telicore, Barns defeated Edwards, Pleasants defeated Jowitt, James a bye.
