The local post and telegraph office had some extraordinary heavy work during the holidays, and the postoffice staff were at work practically all day and night for two days. Som'e 2000 more messages were sent through the telegraph office than in the corresponding period of 1896. In the post-office the increase over the tocal dealt with in the four day period of last year was 250,000 articles. Heavy rain fell in the W 7 airarapa district yesterday, and snow was low on hills near Masterton.
