MISCELLANEOUS PARS
rJjv L.wrE?;/ Mr J. Blake lias turned out The Monk for a spell, owing to a slight strain. Polly Perkins, by Patriarch-Pacific mare, is an unlikely starter at Palmerston North. Daphne in the same stable is a sure starter at Palmerston North. She is weighted at l'2st 61b in the Purse, but I fancy the hack races will bo her mission. It is reported that Douglas has gone amiss. Daunt and Defiant are both doing good work on Mr Ormond's private trnck. The former goes down to Palmerston North for the Manrvwatu Cup, in which he has a really first-class chance. Defiant should also Account for a race before he returns. T. Quinlivan lias a nice inare by Wapiti-Last Chance in his stables just now. She is in work along with another new one—Hush-a-bye, and they both promise well for the future. Rangipunehu goes down to Palmerston for the Trial Hurdles. Rosy ! Pctroline goes tc Ashurst. Stockville and Straybird will run at Kaikora. I like both their chances, especially Straybird in this seven furlong race. Progress is engaged in the Welter at Kaikora, and should run well, on her track form. It. Connop is training Taipirua for hurdle work. The horse appears backward just now. The starting machine has been in evidence on the track for the last few mornings. Tally-ho has gone to Auckland, where she meets Levanter on worse terms than at the last Auckland meeting, since when Levanter has won a steeplechase at Christchurch in better company. Mr Evett seems to have a genuine respect foi Mr lilake's game mare. The Israelite and The Filly had a trial on the track after breakfast, in view of their mutual engagements at the Plumpton meeting. The Filly scored most decisively over Connop's pony, and her chances must be second to none now. The Israelite seemed very much short of work.
TRAINING NOTES
} J3y Lancek.]
Tliis morning saw some good strong work oil the truck. Most of the horses in training are going sound and well, pnd the chances of the local contingent at Kaikora, Palnierston North, and Ashurst look really good. Kangipunelm and Husli-a-bve did half-pace work three times round. Petroline and fctraybird, in the same stable, also put in steady work. Cu'ar de Lion, New Forest and Nightingale galloped a strong mile and a quarter, being joined in the last six furlongs by Capon Rouge, who finished in front ; New Forest next, then Geur de Lion. I like the latter's chance at Palmerston North. Dottrel and Girotla did half-pace work. Aphony ran a mile at a sound pace. Tirant D'Eau and Tire were associated in a strong spin together. Daphne and Polly Perkins did a mile and six furlongs respectively in fair time. Brennan did halfpace work and Nevermore was restricted io cantering exercise. Hobart ran six furlongs at three quarterpace. -Tigressand another did asmart hvefurlongs. Wakelyn was worked at half-pace. There was a good gallop between Missfire, Toriki and Hikoimai over a mile and a quarter. They were joined in the last round by the mare Quilt —Queen Hose. Missfire finished in front and appears to have got rid of most of his soreness. Minnehaha did two strong rounds, finishing the last five furlongs at top. Progress ran two rounds at half-pace. Te Ngaha and Whiritea ran a fast seven, furlongs.
NORTHERN TRAINING NOTES. [By Telkokajph] (Per Pre as Association.) Auckland, TLis day. This morning "St Paul commenced operations at a very early hour. He traversed about one mile and five furlongs, being assisted by Porirua and Markinch at different stages. The gallop was a good one, and will keep St Paul in his position of Cup favorite. Royal Conqueror traversed a mile and a half, Fair Nell and Rex being his companions. The gallop was only a fair one. Daystar, assisted by Armilla and Miss Rose, galloped one mile and a half. He finished up his task really well. Lillie defeated Lady Cuisine over six furlongs. Antares, Flying Fish, and Panoply ran a mile and a half, the first-named being in front at the finish. Conqueror and Altair spurted six furlongs in good style. These two juveniles moved very free, and were much admired. Gold Medallist compassed two rounds alone, brushing home fast over the last seven furlongs. He moved very freely. Nor'west and Flukem did a strong gallop over three rounds. Both went well. St. Crispin, Lady Marion, and Tim galloped round at solid pace, the trio being together at the finish. Davntree was too good for Nora over six furlongs. Nestor, who looks improved, travelled a couple of rounds at three-quarter pace. Levanter and Kingswood performed useful work. Both moved well. Napoleon defeated Partan Jeame over seven furlongs, and Reckless had slightly the best of Yermosa in a six furlong gallop. Coronet covered two miles, and assisting were Minola and Eton. Tho gallop was a good one, and he finished up well. Coronet must have a good chance of winning the Cup. Reindeer jumped the steeplechase fences. He did not shape well. Merry Maid and Pyroxyline strode over a mile and a half. Pyroxyline had to be ridden hard to keep with his companion. Multiform is likely to be a non-starter at the meeting. Tally-ho did useful work. Armilla went amiss after her work this morning. "Waiuku arrives to-morrow.
