One of the most appropriately named residences in Hawke's is •' The Kennels,"' the picturesque home of Mr H. 11. Jackson, the popular huntsman to the Hawke's Bay Hounds. On entering the gates you are greeted with a smiling, hearty welcome from the proprietor, as thorough a sportsman as stands in the colony, who is delighted to understand that the object of your visit is to look over his kennels and see his famous pack. A visitor is not left long in doubt as to where the hounds are, lodged for a perfect babel of barking announces the knowledge of Ins approach, and the sight of the dogs leaping against the bars of their homes amidst a deafening accompaniment of barking is inspiring to one who hunts with the "Galloping Grooms," and to whom such sounds are sweeter than the sublimest music. Nowhere, perhaps, could there lie found a more ideal spot for a Kennel. Nestled under the protection of the surrounding bids the commodious and rigidly-clean premises are situated amidst a lavish supply of running water, winch is responsible for the tit and healthy condition the hounds present. Mr J.iekson is proud of iiis dogs, he tells you so, and he has every reason to be, for they faithfully testify to the care bestowed upon them. The huntsman then introduced the writer to eight youngsiii-s 2-J months' old, which he hopes te bring out next year. The youngsters look promising and should give good sport in due time. A visit to Mr Jackson would not be complete unless one met "Tim," the well-known fox-terrier pet of the Club, who is in evidence at every meet and battles gallantly after the hounds, finishing, if not at the death, at least not long after. Tim is looking fit and well. After partaking of the hospitality of our genial host we parted with a hearty shake and left with the pleasautest impressions of the can- and attention which Mr Jackson bestows on his charges.
