The Laidley Mystery.

THE ATTEMPT TO TRACE THE MAN FRUITLESS. [By Telegraph.] (Per Press Association.) Wellington, This day. Since the discovery of Hawthorne's murder it has been suggested that Laidley, who disappeared some months ago may have met a similar fate. It is stated that the cheque said to have been presented in Wellington by Laidley did not bear his signature. This cheque however was not Laidley's and it was never stated by the authorities it was. It was a cheque drawn by a Wellington tradesman, and the man who presented it merely endorsed it in the name of Harrison, stating at the same time he was really Laidley. The endorsement is in Laidley's writing. Several persons who know the missing man recognised him on the steamer going to Sydney, and added some details which if true are quite sufficient to explain his disappearance. The relative of Mrs Laidley who went to Sydney could not, however, find any trace of the missing man.
