Letters have been received at Wellington, says the Times, Riving an account of tbe arrival of a shipload of Germans at Hawaii, chiefly of the labouring classes. Prior to this there existed in Hawaii's European population a percentage of Germans, but tbe arrival of tbe German H.F. Glade, as one of a projected line of emigrant ships' marks a new departure in the colonising history of the Hawaiian Islands. There were 250 emigrants, or 116 German labourers and their families, young people selected for their special fitness for agricultural pursuits. " Before long," says tbe account, " German labourers will supplant tbe Chinese, Portuguese and .Japanese as labourers in these islands.' '
A woman, named Mrs Annie Hickey, met with a painful end in Napier yesterday. It appears she had been for a long walk and feeling tired took off her shoes and stockings and walked into the surf with the object of bathing her feet. The strong under current running at the time proved to much for the poor women, who was taken off her feet and drawn out into the breakers. An alarm was at once raised b,y lier daughter, who witnessed the sad occurrence, and a crowd quickly assembled. The efforts of Constables Norwood and Wainhouse with another gentleman to save the unfortunate woman were baffled by the heavy seas and the treacherous current, and the body could be seen floating about 200 yards out. Mr P. Emmerson, of the Bank of New Zealand, now appeared on the scene and throwing off his clothes at once plunged boldly into the breakers, and after a plucky struggle succeded in reaching the woman. Mr J. M. Hamilton also plunged into the sea, meeting Emmerson on the return journey and both gentlemen brought the body to shore amidst the applause of the onlookers. Drs DeLisle and Moore were in attendance and pronounced life extinct, and the corpse was conveyed on a stretcher to her house. Deceased was 45 years of age, and leaves a grown-up family. The action of Messrs Emmerson and Hamilton in braving the dangers of an ebb tide with a rough sea, to say nothing of the sharks, deserves notice at the hands of the Humane Society. At the inquest held to-day the jury added a rider to the verdict strongly recommending Emmerson and Hamilton should receive recognition from the Boyal Humane Society.

Fancy goods for the Christmas season a specialty. A traveller who recently visited India states that he was astonished by the precocity of Hindoo children. Many of them are skilful workmen at an age when other children are learning the alphabet. One of the most expert carvers of wood he ever saw was a boy of seven, and many of the handsomest and most costly rugs are woven by children not yet in their teens.
