During the discussion on the question of out-door relief at the Charitable Aid Conference at Wellington on Tuesday morning, the Napier delegate (Mr R. D. 1). M'Lean) referred to the excessive cost to station-owners of providing meals and shakedowns for "sundowners.' It was estimated that as many as 1000 received assistance on one station in his district last year, and though he did not suggest that station owners ought to get a £ for £ subsidy, no doubt they deserved it as much as the Charitable Aid Boards did. After the Polo Tournament which will be held during March next Mr W. Stock purposes to lay down a bicycle track on the Trotting Course at his private expense. Mr Stock is a true sportsman, and his action is a reproach to the paltry selfish spirit in which the question of a public recreation ground was approached some months ago when the object of some public spirited people was defeated by miserable personal jealousies. If the people of Hastings were large minded and generous the town would be one of the chief centres in the North Island instead of being known throughout the colony as a Napier suburb. In reply the Premier said the Bill was not intended to injure the working classes, but unfortunately the eight hours principle was not universally recognised, and in order to prevent a reversion to the old order of things the Government had determined to place the principle on the statute-book. He thought that the exemption asked for by the deputation might be made. Hallo there! Do you want a good summer suit ? Then by all means call on DoDds, the popular tailor.—Adyt.
