The Druids meet to-night: A gold bracelet is advertised as lost. The lease of a paddock is advertised for* The Borough Council overdraft now stands at .£2832 l'2s Bd. There are 41 prohibited persons in the Wanganui district. The Hastings Borough Council last month spent i'i'26 12s 7d on river protection. The Volunteer Fire Brigade hold their monthly meeting this evening. Mr Seddon estimates the surplus for the year ending March, 1898, at .£•224,443. The linder of a purse at the Show will be rewarded on leaving same at this office. The local Borough Council's share of licensing election expenses was £35 19s, which sum was passed for payment last evening. The members of the Hastings Debating Society propose a return debate with the Atheineum Club at Napier before the end of the season. Stubbs, Paterson, and Co, have elsewhere an important announcement in the estate of the late Dr Faulkner ; also a notification re lease of a gentlemen's residence. Applications are invited by the Education Board for the office of truant officer for the school districts of Napier, Tort Ahuriri, Petane, Meanee, Taradale, Clive, Havelock and Hastings. The Engineer-in-Chief has promised to consider proposals made by a Wairarapa deputation for the restoration of two bridges over the liuamahanga damaged by the Easter floods. The Financial Statement delivered by the Colonial Treasurer this afternoon is a record of bulkiness and padding, consisting of no fewer than 26,181 words. This lengthy wire was taken by the local telegraph operators in a manner reflecting credit on all concerned. In consequence of the recent collapse of a gasometer at New Plymouth, leaving the town in darkness, property-owners there have appointed a committee to make enquiries concerning a better method of lighting the town than is provided by the Gas Company. A jeweller in Turin has made a tiny boat of a single pearl. The hull is finely shaped and might serve as a model for a great sloop. The sail is of beaten gold, studded with diamonds, and the binnacle light is a perfect ruby. An emerald serves as its rudder, and its stand is a slab of ivory. Its weight, is less than an ounce and it is said to have cost £IOOO. The annual examination of the Hawke's Bay Girls School, "Woodford House, is always held in September so that the hard work of the term will not fall on the pupils during the hot weather. The last report by Mr "W. F. "Ward, M.A., Wellington College, is decidedly satisfactory and reflects very great credit on the principal, Miss Hodge, and her assistants. The Inspector was very favorably impressed with the results in English, Latin, history, geography, mathematics and science. Woodford House appears to be a model school for young ladies, and parents who desire a first-class education for their daughters cannot do better than place them under the tuition of Miss Hodge. Last night about 8 o'clock information was conveyed to the police that a little girl named Ruby Church, aged 8 years, had strayed from her home in the Havelock road and could not be found. Immediately Constable Smith uis&atched Constable O'Brien to search the district, and though he continued his efforts until past midnight he was unable to trace the child. This morning at 5 o'clock Constable Butler took up the search fruitlessly. On inquiries being made at the child's home this morning it transpired that the young lady had quietly returned to the house in the" midst of the consternation caused by her disappearance and slipping into her cot had fallen off to sleep unconscious of the confusion she was; c;pating.
