Accidents and Fatalities.
(Per Press Association.) Nelson, Oct. 4. This evening the body of a man, afterwards identified as Alexander Carrick Berne, aged 61, of independent means, formerly a chemist, and who was a journalist at Ballarat many ago, was found in the cemetery with his throat cut and a bottle that contained laudanum close by. He had apparently been in a depressed state for some time, suffering from insomnia. He leaves a mother aged 89. An inquest will be held. Westpokt, Oct. 4. A man named Esau Gibbard, aged about 50, died suddenly at Denniston last night. A drowning fatality occurred in the Mokihonui last night. A man named Crouch was ferrying two others named Fellowes and Ferguson over the river, which was "in high flood. Fellowes and Ferguson, contrary to instructions, sat in the bow of the boat, and when it got in the current the boat filled, the three men being washed out. Crouch and Ferguson managed to catch the stem of the boat and hold on till rescued, being completely exhausted. Fellowes was washed down the river and drowned. The body has not yet been recovered. Duxedin, Oct. 4. Donald M'Leod, 87 years of age, a patient at the hospital, who was being treated for epileptic fits caused by an injury to his head sustained through falling off a horse in the country some time ago, died "chis morning while chloroform was being administered preparatory to an operation. An inquest is to be held. The body of Henry Guy was found on the Port Chalmers road on Sunday morning. He was on his way home to his father's farm, Mount Cargill, on Saturday night, and called at a hotel to procure some beer, being then apparently sober. He was found dead under hie'dr&y.
