The Crusade against "Bookies."
A WELL KNOWN FIRM'S PREMISES RAIDED. [By Texegraph.] (Per Press Association.) Dunedin, Sept. 10. Detectives O'Brien and M'Grath this afternoon raided the shop in the Arcade of Barnett and Grant, turf commission agents, and arrested Grant and two clerks named Broad and Whelan. Grant was charged with being the occupier of premises where tote betting was carried on, and the clerks with aiding and abetting. The police seized the books found in the office. Those arrested were afterwards bailed out. It is understood another place was raided, but no evidence was found to show it was used for betting purposes. This day, Peter Grant and assistant were charged at the Police Court with keeping a common gaming bouse, and were remanded 011 the application of the police till Thursday in order that the Stipendiary Magistrate may hear <he case, AU the books were remova from the premises when the raid wa; made and were ordered to be returned to Grant oa promising to produce them tlje hearing.
