A groat festival has been held at Ebb-ii- -1, in Pegwell Bay, where St. Angustiuo and his monks landed on their mission to convert the Angles. Archbishop Vaugban, Monsignor Perrand (Papal Nuncio), and Bishop Grimes, of Christchurch, were amongst those present. News has been received that two Benin (West Africa) chiefs have been shot by the British authorities for murdering a missionary. A third chief implicated committed suicide after being sentenced to death. The trial of the King of Benin, who with a number cf his chiefs recently surrendered and acknowledged submission to the British, is proceeding. Calcutta, Sept. 16. Splendid widespread rain has fallen in India. New York. Sept. 16. A mob of 400 persons forced the gaol at Versailles, Indiana, and 'forcibly abducted and hanged five prisoners awaiting trail on charges of burglary. Sydney, This day. The damage by the lire at the Proprietary mine, Broken Hill, will be confined to the stopes and out area. No ore will be lost and the smelters will resume work at an early date.
