A grand struggle is expected in the match for the swimming championship of the world between Ernie Cavill (the Australian) and Nuttall (England). Cavill is sanguine of success. Great interest is displayed in the Nut-tall-Cavill match. Blight is ravaging the potato crop in Limerick and Clare Counties. The Bishop of Auckland returns to New Zealand in the Australia, and the Bishop of Waiapu in the Rimutaka. Wool —Owing to scarcity the prices at Bradford market show a rise of per pound. The American wheat crop for the present year is estimated at 75,000,000 bushels above the 1896 crop. New York, August 16. Sickness is widely prevalent amongst the Spanish troops in Cuba, 35.000 being inmates of the hospitals. Rome, August 16. In consequence of the result of the combat between Prince Henry of Orleans and the Count de Turin, General Albortoni, who tirst challenged Orleans, has abandoned the proposed duel. August 17. The Comte de Turin was accorded a great reception by the populace on his return to Italy. He has been congratulated by King Humbert. Sydney, August 17. Mr Nicholson, formerly second officer of the Tasmania, joins the Anglian in a similar capacity. A Court-martial found Chief Bandmaster Wright, of H.il.S. Tauranga, guilty of misappropriating money and desertion. He was sentenced to two years' imprisonment and dismissed from the service with disgrace.
